Rock Properties
Quality has really been our watchword, a part and parcel of our corporate existence. In ensuring this, the choice of the rock was decided by the conformance to the industrial required standard in terms of the rock properties. Some of the properties of the aggregates from ICSL quarry are as follows:
SPECIFIC GRAVITY (SG)
The average specific gravity of rocks within ICSL lease is ≈ 2.8
HARDNESS
Hardness is measure of strength and abrasiveness. The Schmidt Hammer Rebound Hardness for rocks under ICSL has an average value of 51. This value shows that the rock type in this area is highly resistant to erosion and other agents of denudations, hence good material for buildings and road construction.
EFFECTIVE POROSITY/WATER ABSORPTION (%)
Porosity is the percentage of voids and cavities in the rock body. We have rock porosity of 0.41. This is suggestive of non-saturation even when rock samples are submerged in water over the period of time. This value is quite higher and better than 3% maximum industrial requirement for rock aggregate in construction industry.
COMPREHENSIVE STRENGTH (MN/M2)
Compressive strength otherwise known as “rock crushing strength “ takes into consideration properties of mineral constituents of the rock such as hardness, cleavages foliation, degree of magmatisation, banding, void, ratio, shape of voids within rock and nature of banding between the minerals grains.
The rock strength value is 100MN/M2).The values are in excess of what is required for industrial production of rock aggregates for varieties of construction work and dimension stones. This has no water of crystallization and has no water absorption capacity.
